About Varalakshmi Vratam
One of the important Hindu festivals, 'Varalakshmi
Vratam is performed in the shukla paksha shravana masam,
the Friday immediately following the full moon day. It
is a festival to appease the goddess Lakshmi, the
consort of Vishnu (one of the Hindu Trinity). The name
Vishnu means 'Pervading Everywhere,' and Lakshmi, his
Consort, is symbolical of the forces found everywhere.
Eight identifiable & worshipped forces are Sri (Wealth),
Bhu (Earth), Sarasvati (Learning), Preet (Love), Kirti
(Fame), Shanti (Peace), Tushti (Pleasure) and Pushti
(Strength). Each one of these forces is called as
Lakshmi. All these eight forces are called as the Ashta
Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu, who represents the preservative
aspect of the universe, radiates these forces. These
forces are personified and worshipped as Lakshmi. Since
Health, Wealth and Prosperity depend upon the rhythmic
play of these forces, women largely invoke the blessings
of Lakshmi for the entire family.
