Holi -
Significance
Spiritually, Holi signifies the triumph of good over
evil, of all that's unpleasant over all that's eternally
beautiful. Holi means that spring has
arrived & its time to bid
bye to chilling winter season. Since it falls on the 'Vasanta
Ritu' or spring season in the
Hindu calendar, Holi is also popularly known as 'Vasantotsav'.
This festival is full of so much fun
that no one can miss the colored waters, balloons and
rooftop water showers.
There are lots of myths behind the origin of Holi.
According to one, Holika, an
evil mythical creature, tried to destroy her nephew, a
great god, by attempting to burn him
but in the end, good
wins over the evil and she dies;
the God is saved.
Holi celebrations
actually start the night before with a big flare to
clear away dried leaves and branches from winter also
- it also means a spring clean up. Another story is inspired by
the legendary love between the Hindu God Krishna and
his beloved Radha. Holi is celebrated even now as an
occasion celebrating love and passion! It is believed
that the bright colors represent energy, life
& joy.
